Geopark Ranah Minang Silokek: A Legacy of Natural Wonders in West Sumatra
Welcome, dear travelers, to our journey towards Geopark Silokek, an enchanting destination located approximately 145 kilometers to the east of Padang City.
Our overland adventure is estimated to take around four hours.
If you’re starting from Muaro Sijunjung, the capital of the district, the distance is a mere 15 kilometers.
Let’s delve into the essence of Silokek, a serene nagari with a temperature ranging from 23 to 24 degrees Celsius due to its hillside location, standing at about 200 meters above sea level.
Spanning an area of approximately 1,918 hectares, Nagari Silokek falls within the jurisdiction of Sijunjung Sub-district, and its populace is predominantly comprised of farmers.
The natural landscapes here are truly mesmerizing, featuring expansive green rice fields and distinctive tropical trees attempting to conceal the hidden geological treasures of Geopark Silokek.
These ancient rocks date back hundreds of millions of years, traversing three geological eras.
The oldest rocks, as quoted from Geopark Silokek’s official website, originated in the Paleozoic Era, precisely during the Permian period (between 299 million to 252 million years ago) and the Carboniferous period (between 359 million to 299 million years ago).
Silokek offers a plethora of natural wonders, such as the Karst Hills, river landscapes, and rocks that are still in their pristine state.
Moving forward, the Traditional Village in Jorong Padang Ranah provides a cultural experience with traditional houses, Bakaua (harvest festival), and showcases local crafts like songket weaving and delightful culinary offerings, all aimed at captivating visitors.
Continuing our journey, the Sumpur Kudus region introduces us to the spectacular Lubuk Pendakian Waterfall, not to mention cultural sites like the Makam Rajo Ibadat/Raja Pagaruyung, Batu Uji, and religious attractions like the Makam Syekh Ibrahim.
